Dinghies

Tuesday evening adult sailing is an excellent way to meet other club members as well as gaining experience in Dinghy Sailing.

Newcomers to sailing are teamed with an experienced helmsman and can learn the basic boat handling skills usually in one of the clubs Wayfarers – a large and very stable dinghy which can accommodate 4 adults.

Although the adult sailing evenings are not a formal training course a novice sailor attending for the whole season should be able to helm the wayfarer with reasonable confidence by the seasons end. You will also gain valuable experience of local sailing conditions and the effect of wind and tide.

For those wishing to progress to racing, informal race training sessions are often another feature of the evenings. Prospective racers are helped by Roger MacDonald a qualified RYA instructor. Prospective racers may wish to use their own boats for race training although Toppers or other club boats can be used.

The group meets at 18.00 hrs each Tuesday from early May through to the end of September. The evening will normally start with a short chat with Roger covering topics such as boat handling, weather, tides, safety etc.

Sailing conditions for the evening are assessed and a destination agreed for the evening sail. Everyone then splits into groups of between 2-4 led by an experienced helmsman, the Wayfarers are rigged and the group sets off accompanied by the club safety boat.

We return to the club moorings by 20.00 hrs where boats have to be safely moored, de-rigged and the equipment put away. The sailors then repair to the club bar for an après sail session.
